Abilene's Cindy Maxwell Takes Home $10,000 After The Sharpie® 500

Sep 4, 2003

(Bristol, Tenn. - September 4, 2003) - Sharpie, the popular family of permanent markers, announces that Cindy Maxwell of Abilene, Texas won $10,000 in the conclusion of the brand's national promotion, "You Could Win $1,000,000," at the Sharpie 500 in Bristol, Tenn. This was the second year that Sharpie offered the chance at $1 million. Maxwell was paired up with the No. 31 car and Robby Gordon for the potential $1 million pot. A series of challenges, including a pit collision and a torched rear gear, led Gordon to a 35th place finish at the Sharpie 500. The promotion was among the highlights of this year's race, which put the best NASCAR Winston Cup teams against the challenges of the "world's fastest half-mile."

Maxwell, who works for the city of Abilene, has been a NASCAR fan for "years" and always wanted to come to Bristol. "I can't tell you how happy I was to come here," said Maxwell. "I came down here to enjoy the race and maybe win a little money. I would like to thank everyone from Sharpie, it was great."

She entered the sweepstakes along with more than 500,000 other entries via and was one of 10 individuals Sharpie brought to Bristol with hopes of striking it rich. Sharpie, with the help of TNT's Benny Parsons, blindly selected Cindy as the "million dollar woman" at a press conference hosted at Bristol Motor Speedway. Maxwell then randomly selected the No. 22 starting position for the Sharpie 500. Qualifying for the race determined the money was on the No. 31 car.

While $1 million was the grand prize that Cindy was racing for, Sharpie also extended $100,000 for 2nd through 5th place; $50,000 for 6th through 10th place; and $10,000 for any finish outside of the top 10.
