LAKE LANIER ISLANDS, Ga. - Atlantic Coast and Southeastern Conference coaches, officials and celebrities joined nearly 200 golfers May 4-5 in the fifth annual Sharpie ACC/SEC Golf Invitational - a Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl event - to benefit the Georgia Baptist Health Care System's Mobile Unit. The charitable outing generated $12,000 for the Mobile Unit, which travels the state providing health care to disadvantaged communities.
ESPN college football analyst Lee Corso, Georgia Tech's Dave Braine and Chan Gailey, Auburn Athletic Director David Housel and Duke Head Coach Carl Franks were among the many university representatives to take part in this year's event.
"Sharpie is extremely proud to be in a position to make a positive impact on our new community," said Bob Parker, Sharpie group president, Newell Rubbermaid. "This is a prestigious event and we will take great pride in helping it grow into something that will help provide care to Georgians on an annual basis."
Newell Rubbermaid, the parent company of Sanford North America - maker of the nation's number-one brand of permanent markers, recently relocated their corporate headquarters to the Atlanta area from Illinois. This is the first year that Sharpie has been title sponsor of the event.
"This was, without doubt, the most successful golf event in our history and was due to the involvement of Sharpie and its first-class leadership," said Gary Stokan, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl president. "We're looking forward to a strong partnership in this event that will hopefully continue to provide much-needed assistance to our friends at Georgia Baptist Health Care."
The Sharpie ACC/SEC Golf Invitational was established in 1998 as a Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Festival Division event. Each spring, the golf invitational draws officials and celebrities from conferences affiliated with the Bowl to Atlanta to participate in a two-day event that includes a pre-golf dinner reception, entertainment and golf tournament to benefit local Atlanta charities. www.Chick-fil-ApeachBowl.com
