World's most popular family of permanent markers announces that there
are a million reasons you can't miss NASCAR's premier night race, the
Sharpie 500 in August
Bellwood, Ill. - March 23, 2002 - You don't have to be among NASCAR's
elite drivers to collect a $1 million purse. Sharpie, the world's most
popular family of permanent markers, today announced You Could Win
$1,000,000 at the Sharpie 500, where one lucky fan will have the chance to
cash in at NASCAR's premier night race, the Sharpie 500.
To officially kick-off the race to a million, Kurt Busch, driver of the
No. 97 Rubbermaid/Sharpie Ford, will be driving a special paint scheme
during the Food City 500 held at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday, March
24.
"Sharpie is used by millions of people everyday in almost as many
different ways," said Paul Donahue, president of Sanford North America,
makers of Sharpie - title sponsor of the Sharpie 500. "Now, how you use
your Sharpie may mean a million dollars."
Individuals are eligible to win by going to sharpie500.com and entering
the UPC codes found on specially marked Sharpie packages sold in stores
throughout the United States and Canada (void in Alaska, Hawaii and
Quebec). A purchase is not necessary; consumers can also request a free
code on the web site. The sweepstakes runs from March 1 through August
13, 2002.
By August 14, 10 semifinalists will have been selected by random drawing
to win a trip for two to the Sharpie 500. Once in Bristol for race
weekend, the semifinalists will be randomly assigned a position based on
the top 10 qualifiers for the Food City 250 held on Friday, August 23.
The person whose driver earns the checkered flag or finishes highest
wins the chance at $1 million on Saturday night at the Sharpie 500.
"Sharpie is giving fans a million reasons to want to be that lucky fan
at the Sharpie 500," said Kurt Busch of the No. 97 Rubbermaid/Sharpie
Ford. "The Sharpie 500 is an incredible race on a track that is fast,
unpredictable and exciting. And now, someone can possibly win $1
million, you can't help but be excited about it."
Prior to the Sharpie 500, the finalist will blindly draw one of drivers
for the race. If that randomly selected driver wins the race, the fan
takes home $1 million; $100,000 for 2nd through 5th place; $50,000 for
6th through 10th place; and $10,000 for any finish outside of the top 10.
