Posted on August 14, 2002

(Bellwood, Ill. - August 14, 2002) - When you think of Bristol Motor Speedway and the Sharpie 500, you think of paint trading, pit strategy and, above all, the excitement of short track racing. But at the Sharpie 500 this year, the race is only one of the attractions that fans can take advantage of. Sharpie, the world's most popular family of permanent markers, is proud to announce a wide variety of festivities for those traveling on August 24 to Bristol, Tennessee, the site of the Sharpie 500. Sharpie "You Could Win $1,000,000" One lucky winner from Sharpie's national sweepstakes will vie for $1 million at the Sharpie 500. Based on a random drawing of qualified drivers for the premier night race, the finalist will have a shot at $1 million; $100,000 for 2nd through 5th place; $50,000 for 6th through 10th place; and $10,000 for any finish outside of the top 10. The Little Sharpie 500 Kids from across the country will race for BMS braggin' rights and tickets to the hottest race on the NASCAR Circuit. Open to children ages five to nine, kids will compete at the Food City Family Race Nights on August 21 and 22. The top four finishers from each night will then go on to the finals, which will be held on the BMS track just prior to the Sharpie 500. Sharpie's Ultimate Fan Wall Roughly the length of a football field, the Ultimate Fan Wall gives race fans a chance to write a message to their favorite driver (of course using their Sharpie marker). The wall features 43 of the best-known drivers in NASCAR today. Cool Cars, Cool Colors Imagine a white NASCAR car colored by thousands of fans all with Sharpie. The creation will be outside the track on Friday and Saturday and showcased just prior to the Sharpie 500 in a feature lap during Sharpie 500 pre-race activities. How Do You Use Your Sharpie? A Sharpie of virtually every kind, every color and for every use will be handed out to fans on Friday and Saturday - from Sharpie Fine Point to Sharpie Chisel to Sharpie Twin Tip permanent markers. More than 30 individuals at several locations will be handing out different styles and colors of the world's most popular family of permanent markers. Newell/Rubbermaid Block Party The traveling interactive area returns to the Sharpie 500 for the second year in a row. The "Block Party" also made a stop at the Food City 500 in March. Fans can test their luck and skill at a number of "hands-on" activities, such as the Wheel of Sharpies and the Rubbermaid Roughneck Challenge.
